Beyond the Basics - Search Engine Optimization Techniques.
In this article we cover search engine optimization techniques.
Instead of classic SEO topics like: "keyword research", "on-page seo" and "link building", you'll learn more advanced SEO techniques.
Domain Name
This technique is as old as SEO. If you want to rank for the word "car", register a domain name that has the word "car" in it. For example "carportal.com" or "carjournal.com".
Domain Age
Search engines look at domain age as cue. If a domain is old, search engines will trust it more.
Technique: spammers maintain thousands of domains, usually cheapest names they can get. If a spammer wants to build a spam network with thousands of websites, it makes economic sense to buy cheap.
Old domains start at $100 - $200, which is unpractical to buy unless you want to run a decent website. Imagine buying thousand websites at $150. Now exact amount at $5. Which one is spammer likely to go with? This is the assumption search engines use.
SEO professionals developed this into search engine optimization technique and choose old domain names over new ones.
Themed Content Website
Websites that have over a 100 pages on the same topic are believed to rank better. If a website is tightly focused on a niche theme, it has all synonymous and semantic keywords within its content. Search engines will choose that website over a generic portal (assuming all other ranking factors are equal). This SEO technique goes in line with basic web ecommerce principle of focusing on niche offers.
One Topic Per Page
If you create articles, focus on one topic per page or one key phrase per page. It increases relevancy of a webpage, since the overall keyword density goes up.
Flash and Java Script
This is merely a search engine optimization technique, but many site owners, usually amateurs, fall for the hip features Flash and JavaScript offer. Stay away from both if you want to rank well. It's OK to feature a flash header, or to plug a flash file within content, but don't make entire web site in flash. You'll be the only visitor.
Put all JavaScript into an external file. Search engine don't like it. Got to make search engine happy and use all SEO techniques that help with rankings. Avoid JavaScript links.
Update Your Website As Often as You Can
Google loves new content. It's like ice-cream for the kids. They're always happy to eat some. As a search engine optimization technique, new content addition tells search engines that your website is active and there's a good reason to come back often. Many websites add articles and maintain blogs.
Blogs are easy to update and don't require HTML knowledge. Wordpress produces perfectly search engine friendly pages by default, so you can add it to your SEO portfolio.
Once you start blogging as a search engine optimization technique, syndicate your blog with Google Ping Service, which reports to Google every time you post an article.
Check Dead Links
Search engines like quality websites. A dead link is like a broken rail. Spiders can't follow it. This also tells search engines that users may have poor experience if they send you visitors. Fix all the broken links.
Get Link Sleuth to check for broken links.
Include Quality Outbound Links
Google looks at your outbound links (links from your website) as a cue to the quality of content on your website. For example, if you talk about credit score and link to Equifax and Transunion, along with FICO, this hints Google that the article is about credit score. It raises your overall relevancy.
This search engine optimization technique doesn't get rankings, but it helps along the way, in combination with other techniques.
Site Map
Site map is a page that has links to all other pages on your website. Site map helps search engines find all the pages on your website. This can help rank pages which otherwise would not be found.
Hope those search engine optimization techniques help. Good luck.
