Search engine optimization described in Wikipedia

Search engine optimization (SEO) as a subset of search engine marketing seeks to improve the number and quality of visitors to a web site from “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. The quality of visitor traffic can be measured by how often a visitor using a specific keyword leads to a desired conversion action, such as making a purchase or requesting further information. In effect, SEO is marketing by appealing first to machine algorithms to increase search engine relevance and secondly to human visitors. The term SEO can also refer to “search engine optimizers”, an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients.

Search engine optimization is available as a stand-alone service or as a part of a larger marketing campaign. Because SEO often requires making changes to the source code of a site, it is often most effective when incorporated into the initial development and design of a site, leading to the use of the term “Search Engine Friendly” to describe designs, menus, Content management systems and shopping carts that can be optimized easily and effectively.

A range of strategies and techniques are employed in SEO, including changes to a site’s code (referred to as “on page factors”) and getting links from other sites (referred to as “off page factors”). These techniques include two broad categories: techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design, and those techniques that search engines do not approve of and attempt to minimize the effect of, referred to as spamdexing. Some industry commentators classify these methods, and the practitioners who utilize them, as either “white hat SEO”, or “black hat SEO”.[1] Other SEOs reject the black and white hat dichotomy as an over-simplification.

Google Link Analysis Tool

There is a ton of information about how to see and read your links out there but now Google itself is helping.
Google has announced the release of a tool that many thought would never come but always dreamt of – a tool that shows us our links for our sites. It has been sought over since Google changed the link command. In any event, Google has given us access to see the links of our sites – if we want. How it all works and more of the history can be found at Danny’s Google Releases New Link Reporting Tools (read it).

To access it, you need to login to Google Webmaster Console and verify your sites.

But please note that Google does not count all those links you see, for example if you see links that are nofollowed or from penalized sites or low quality sites – it doesn’t mean Google is using those links to count your score.

For years, Google’s link: command (and see here) has deliberately failed to show all the links to a website. This came out of Google’s fear that site owners simply wanted the data to try and manipulate rankings — which was pretty true.  Instead, they only provided a sampling of backlinks. Today, that changes. Google Webmaster Central is rolling out new support allowing you to view and even download thousands of links to your site (official news here and here).

Google isn’t currently showing 100% of your links but it is getting better!

Google Pagerank update is over. Jan- Feb 2007

From what i have seen on the serps is a good indication that the latest google pagerank update has come to a conclusion.

I did notice a change in the Google Toolbar PR ranking for each of my sites over the past week or so. I am very pleased! I seems to be a permanent change and yes I do spend too much time fixating on the little green bar. Keep in mind its not an accurate indicator of your true Google PageRank, only a very broad approximation.

Matt Cutts said..

Okay, it’s been a while since my last infrastructure status report, so I’ll briefly cover the things that I know are going on.

The quarterly-ish PageRank export is underway. As always, don’t expect traffic or rankings to dramatically change, because these PageRank values are already incorporated into our scoring.
