Planning your vacation

Are you planning to leave your website home all alone while you and your family fly away on vacation? Of course you deserve some rest but it’s not a good idea to stop working on your website for 2 weeks, especially if you have a blog where people are expecting a post every day or so.

I know… right now you’re probably imagining yourself playing with your kids in the sand, having your girlfriend putting suntan lotion on your back or trying to make eye contact with that “McDreamy” lifeguard but…

If you don’t want to drop in the listings, you will have to make an effort to post a couple of comments on your blog or if you don’t have a blog, add a paragraph or 2 of text on the most important pages of your site. You don’t need to go crazy: Just do some modifications so it doesn’t look like you have abandoned your website. Read More »

Another cool Google feature

If you like reading blogs on different subjects, you probably did the same thing as I did to get info which is typing keywords in the Google Search Bar. Well, I’m sure a lot of you know already but there is a quicker way to find relevant information on a particular subject.

What yoo need to do is to click on the ‘more’ button (located at the top of the Google home page) and click again on ‘Blog search’ (Google Beta Blog Search). You will then be redirected to another page where you can search for anything you can think off and you’ll get only the results related to the blogs indexed in Google. You also have the option to do an advanced search or to sort the results by date or relevance. Read More »

Google Date-Base Search

Matt Cutt Says:
Previously, I believe Google estimated the age of a url as the last time that we fetched that page. Given how quickly Google refreshes its main index, that didn’t mean quite as much recently. Now for date-based search, Google estimates url ages by the first date that we saw a url.

As my previous post on this blog titled as “SEO PROCRASTINATION - SEO 3B”, mentioned that you have to “Be Active” with your website, well indeed Googlers wants you to do so as they have improved google date-base search.

What is google date-base search?

In Google date-based search, they estimate url ages by the first date that Google saw your URL. If you do an google advance search tool with determine that you only want to get result within the past of 3-months. Indeed, you will see search index result. Read More »

How to choose your SEO expert

If you’re thinking about hiring an SEO expert soon, you should prior to do that, visit a couple of websites to check what you are really going to get for your money and ask yourself some questions. Will I really get results? How can they prove they will get me results? Will I get a good customer service? Are they going to take time to answer my questions since I just know little about SEO? What services will be included in my SEO plan? Are they going to let me down after a month? What kind of guarantee will I get?

First of all, an SEO expert should be able to prove you he can get you results by showing you examples of his or her clients that are on the first page for their targeted keywords. If the expert refuses to show you examples or give references, run! It probably means that they are not very good at what they do because if they would be, they would be proud to show you at least 2 or 3 of their client’s listings.

A good SEO expert should also be able to explain what kind of strategies he or she will use. Is it linking, rich content or addition of keywords in the Meta tags? Whatever the type of strategy, make sure it’s a legal strategy i.e. no links hidden or invisible text on same color background, etc.
Usually, when a client is calling us for the first time, we will take a good 15 minutes to explain and answer basic questions regarding the client’s website. Then, we will offer a plan that fits the client’s needs or paid consultation sessions if the client wants to optimize his site himself.

The majority of SEO companies are offering 6 months to 1 year optimization contract. This type of contract will protect both you and the company you are dealing with.
Please note that you should also invest in an SEO service called monthly maintenance. Monthly maintenance means that ‘tweaking’ will be done on your website on a monthly basis in order to secure your ranking in case you get bumped from your spot by new competitors or because of changes in the Google algorithms, etc.

Finally, the most important thing you need to know is that if somebody guarantees you a certain spot or result on the first page: run! SEO experts don’t work at Google: they are offering their expertise and because of that, they can’t guarantee any particular position. The only thing they can guarantee is that they will do their best to improve your ranking. Of course, you’ll have to use your own judgment whether you want to trust the person or not. If you feel the expert has been honest with you and you’re satisfied with the answers you got from him, then I think it’s a perfect match!

Google Guidelines updated.

Thats right Google has made the guidelines more clear. During SMX they were slipped into place. Matt said there would be some changes and poof that was fast! I think its great that Google takes the time to give guidence to people that don’t fully understand the rules of fare seo play.

Quality guidelines

These quality guidelines cover the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices not listed here (e.g. tricking users by registering misspellings of well-known websites).

Google Webmaster Guidelines

Following these guidelines will help Google find, index, and rank your site.

* Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
* Don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects.
* Don’t send automated queries to Google.
* Don’t load pages with irrelevant keywords.
* Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
* Don’t create pages that install viruses, trojans, or other badware.
* Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.
* If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.

There are more articles in detail on WebmasterWorldBecause Google and especially Google Search Quality Team / WebSpam Team penalize sites which are not in accordance with the guidelines, its of importance to make those guidelines easy to understand and keep them updated as new factors which affect ranking/indexing emerge.
For those of you that did not know Matt Cutts heads up Google’s WebSpam Team and he does a good darn job keeping it just that spam free.

Thanks seroundtable.com for the heads up on the updated guidelines.

Duplicate Content

Thanks to all those search engine engineering, who are working harder and harder to create such a sophisticated search algorithm to determine whether our pages are duplicate contents or not. This is genuine question that will arise before you start search engine optimization and we could be over analyzed this matter easily. I would like to ease every optimizer who is worrying about it.

I will take common objective of duplicate contents, which is website blogging, forum discussion or content management system. Most of these website are commonly database driven and generated its pages from administration scripts that use the same website template over and over again within its pages creations. Would the search engine robots see this as a duplicate content?
GOOD NEWS, the answer is NO
.

There are different types of duplicate content. There’s certainly exact duplicate detection where you see the exact duplication of pages including its text contents. In that case, search engine robots definitely define your pages as duplicate contents. But, most of websites are not duplicating its text content in the case that you would see on website blogging, forum discussion or content management website. Search engines able to detect these type of website using a near duplicates, and it has lot of sophisticated logic on it. Read More »
