Corporate Black hat SEO classification.

Was browsing through a couple of websites and stumbled upon a really funny article, thought you might find interesting as well =)))

“So now that more and more companies are getting involved in one form or another of search marketing, chances are at some point some of you may get a call from, and actually end up pitching for the occasional consulting gig.

To help you transition from working in your bathing suit to a pinstripe suit you may need to revise your vocabulary a little, here’s handy terminology conversion guide:

Cloaking: This should always be referred to as Targeted IP, User Agent or Geo-Specific delivery.
Web Scraping: This should be referred to as Information Archiving or Caching.
Click-Pimping: This should be known as Seamlessly Integrating Contextually Relevant Infotisements to Maximize ROI.
Website Hijacking: This practice should be called Digital Content Re-Assignment.
GoogleBowling and GoogleWashing: These actions should be referred to as Competition Displacement.
Blog Comment Spam: This should be characterized as Bursty Link Acquisition.
Offshore Link Building: This process should be known as Financially Prudent Methodology for Increasing Brand Awareness.
Content Remixing: This process should be called Information Aggregation and ReDistribution along Secondary Vertical Channels.
Wikipedia Spam: These type of actions should be classified as Grass Roots Adaptations of Public Database.
Button Pushing: This process for building websites should be called Budget Sensitive Content Creation.”

Google to become wireless carrier?

Google“Google Inc. announced Friday that it will apply to bid for wireless spectrum in a January Federal Communications Commission auction.”wsj.com

According to WallStreet sources, Google is set to bid on 700MHz wireless spectrum, which will technically make it a wireless carrier. Though sources speculate on whether Google would operate such a network or allow other carriers to use it, if the purchase is successful, Google’s spot under the sun will be guaranteed, regardless of the route it chooses to pursue.

Search Engine Land reports approximate cost of the network is $4.6 Billion US, while Google has around $13 Billion in cash on hands.

“We believe it’s important to put our money where our principles are, consumers deserve more competition and innovation than they have in today’s wireless world. No matter which bidder ultimately prevails, the real winners of this auction are American consumers who likely will see more choices than ever before in how they access the Internet.” - Eric Schmidt

Not long ago Google launched a new program called Android, with purpose of developing new software for Google engineered operating system aimed at handheld PDA devices. It is not a Gphone as many would like to call it, but an operating system for various types of cellular phones.

A carefully planned strategy.

If Google is to purchase the network, it would have the potential of becoming the largest US wireless carrier and internet provider.

Google PhoneBranding is very powerful and Google’s brand equity is equal to that of Verizon, Sprint and T-mobile combined. Add a G-phone to the equation, even better - a dozen of Gphones, with usability surpassing that of Windows mobile and Blackberries, I believe you have a pretty good formula for success.

Of course it is not as easy as it seems. FFCs rules and pricing only degrate and slow down the development, and in comparison to Japan’s wireless infrastructure North America is crawling behind like wounded prey. A new network would be a good start, since my guess is, Google will go for something very fast in terms of wireless data transfer.

“According to some estimates, the cost of building a nationwide wireless network over the 700 MHz spectrum is around $2 billion versus a nationwide 1900MHz PCS that costs approximately $4 Billion.” - Gigaom

Pricing of course varies on technology and many other different factors, however the main difference can be passed to consumers in higher quality transfer rates.

It will be very exciting to find out the final call of the bidding, so lets wait and see how it unfolds further.

Google to release GDrive for all your storage needs?

“Google Inc. wants to offer consumers a new way to store their files on its hard drives, in a strategy that could accelerate a shift to Web-based computing and intensify the Internet company’s competition with Microsoft Corp.” - wsj.com

Google is set out to release a new GDrive service that will allow Googlers to store all of their data on it. Though a number of companies have tried this approach, it did not become too popular among online crowds, but in this case Google has a bigger gun over everyone – it’s the big G doing it, and when Google does something, everyone hears about it.

The “downs” of remote storage

Privacy. Facebook is on fire due to privacy issues, Google team must be extra careful in their approach. Sensitive information such a docs, pictures, music and video will not be easily shared, unless there is a solid in your face “What goes here stays here” policy.

Mass Element. Again the Facebook, what is happening with a new Google like superstar is not only affecting Facebook but the internet in general. I believe users will and have become wary of their personal info, and it will take some effort to convince them to turn over valuable gigabits of 1s and 0s to a remote company.

Speed. I have 15GB of music, with my uplink it will take about 3 month to get that to a remote server, name me a good reason of doing so. =)

HD Cost. Hard drives are as cheap as they can get, storage is in abundance, why go remote? CDs, SDs and mp3 players do the job of data movement, there is not really a need for remoteness. Of course some might agrgue, it is always good to have your favourite song that can be listened anywhere with an internet connection and I have to agree with them.

A new Social P2P Bomb?

One thing that could help five year old project is going social. Social is Web 2.0, it is a nifty hot thing that gets the fortunes and what is hotter then a social P2P file network? Slap! What about the copy write laws? Hmm….. That would be a dilemma, so social P2P is off the table, but considering the fact that 21st century youth have never bought an album(yes me too), this would be a goldmine.

Gdrive stands at the core of a really touchy subject and though it is a good move on Google’s side, Googleplex team will have to convince a lot of people and do it very well, or offer people something new and unique, Google so far has been an expert at it - fans are guaranteed.

Yahoo and Abode are going to show PPC ads in PDF documents.

Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo

According to Reuters, Adobe and Yahoo have agreed to launch new ad service network designed to display text link ads in Adobe PDF documents.

Public testing begins today so if you always wanted to write that novel, but never got your hands on it - this is your chance =).

Washington post: “The benefit for advertisers: They get a new channel for their ads. Readers will benefit when publishers offer for free documents that they previously charged a fee for, or that they simply didn’t make available online.”

I am surprised Yahoo were the first ones to get there, since this kind of a model definitely has future. So far the only way to make money with free e-books was with affiliate Click Bank networks, so a new relationship will only benefit all 4 sides:

  • Yahoo
  • Adobe
  • Publishers
  • Readers

This will work the in same way as classic Pay Per Click.

Digg Google duo – Digg like search results via Google, SEOs beware!

Google is experimenting with a new type of Digg style search, that allows people to move and bury search results.

Diggle

Google Experimental was launched in May. It allows anyone with Google account to participative in testing of new projects.

What if Google became Diggle?

So far, voting does not affect the index and only shows adjusted results at a personal level, but I think it has the potential of influencing the overall results. Google currently tracks activities throughout its empire at:

  • Search
  • Email service
  • Customized home page
  • Feed reader / Feed management
  • Analytics
  • Ad network
  • Video content
  • Google accounts
  • Firefox(which sends data to Google)

A degree of popularity and relation to the interests of Google users is probably taken into account and plays a role in calculating the overall power of the website and its influence in the industry. If Google is to allow people to digg itself, it would most likely do it at a personal level. Digg has some very advanced algorithms, and not all algocrackers get them entirely, however Muhammad Saleem from Search Engine Land is confident that Digg has anti network algos that look for patterns in user behavior that constantly promote certain authors or certain type of content.

What I am trying to say is, Google could allow complete control of search results at a personal level and a degree of influence of the main index. Suppose 200 marketing people who get emails about marketing, read news about marketing, have feeds on marketing and search for marketing, start moving or deleting pages in search results - will most likely be taken into consideration by Google.

Why it is highly improbable we will have Digg Google duo?

Link farmers will have a new job =). A perfect example of anyone-can-participate that’s gone wrong is Wiki, and a monstrous, enterprise with multi billion dollar sub industries around it like Google, might have a tough time fighting off advanced user spam networks.

The Dark Side of Wikipedia - “Wiki-Hacker created several accounts on different IPs, then vandalized a number of pages, mostly small and under-the-radar, appearing to look like a competitor (adding links, references, promotional content, etc). He then “investigated” these pages through his trusted account, “found” the “spammers,” removed their content, and was praised by some other community editors. Later, he used the newfound trust to create subtle, but effective references for his own client.”

I can guarantee there will be colossal networks of spammers working together, moving stuff up and down with hundreds account per each, and hundreds of identity interests to appear genuine, so the idea of digg like search will be probably off the table, at least for now.

Just my thoughts.

Internet advertising is predicted to grow.

In the report released by Internet Advertising Bureau, and reported by Clickz, internet advertising spending increased 25% in Q3 2007 as opposed to Q3 2006 and totals 15.2 billion.

More people are going out online to research, in many cases buy, and companies are spending more on a new(to many) promising medium.

  • Paid search’s share of online ad spend will continue to hover in the 40% range through 2011.
  • Combined, the 100 top advertisers spent nearly $230 million less on the traditional four media in 2006 compared with 2005, while boosting internet ad spending by $558 million.
  • Rich media, which includes video advertising, will rise from 8% share this year to over 13% in 2011.
    • Clickz

graph

Recently, Murdoch’s News Corporation announced it is working to expand Fox Interactive Media (FIM) and become an online advertising platform:

"We’re well down the path in terms of discussions with some of the other News Corp properties to do ad serving," Levinsohn said. "Ultimately we’ll take the company off network and become an ad network for assets outside of the News Corporation empire."

News Corp. wants a piece of the big pie with a marshmallow core, after observing phenomenal growth of Google and Microsoft’s moves to get some more advertising on their side.

Cutomers own their experience.

People have already gained more control of the content being thrown at them, the perfect examples are MySpace and FaceBook, whose platforms target prospects only by calculating their fields of interest from the information provided. Time to listen to what they got to say!

Joe Consumer: But I’m someone who actually uses your product! Who could possibly have greater credibility and authority to shape new ideas?

Consumer Relations: Listen, if we listen, we’re liable. That’s what the lawyers tell me. I just work here.

Joe Consumer: But your execs are quoted on the Web site and in “The Wall Street Journal” as saying you always want to hear what the consumer has to say.

Consumer Relations: That’s marketing spin. This is the consumer relations department. No one really wants us to listen to the consumer. Didn’t our online feedback forms give you a clue?

Google Adwords and Canadian/US Dollars.

SEO Roundtable reported that some a number of Canadian advertisers started switching to US dollars in their PPC campaigns in order to save money due to the steady slide of US dollar over the last couple of years. It seems like a logical step for an advertiser, but just how much you save and what is the trick?

By far the biggest challenge facing Adwords users is the power of a new account and its QS score, which in many cases would be “poor” instead of “OK”. One of the Webmaster World forum users has outlined a solution that helped his organization overcome this:

“….Unfortunately, you’re being affected by the account quality score, which takes into account historical data and your spend…..we sacrificed an old account, moved everything over, and our account quality problems were erased instantaneously….. I would recommend running only your very best campaigns in terms of CTR on the new account. Run the rest of the campaigns on the old account. After you spend enough money and achieve a high enough CTR, you’ll be in good shape to start unpausing the other campaigns…”

At this point I would suggest trying completely eliminating PPC activity on the old accout/s and switching operations a US currency based one. You might not get the same results in the beginning and lose some of the previous traffic, however if Google sees a shift in your activity it will not be long for auto adjustments to take place, since Google definitely tracks all of the activity within and outside of its empire.

The benefit of doing such a shift is obvious and will results only in greater savings overtime. Though a little might be lost in the beginning, it is better to do so that now, before dollar devaluates to the point of 1.5 against CDN and you will have to take a bigger hit.

Right now Canadian dollar trades at the rate of 1.0114 against the US currency and many people speculate the trend will only grow stronger with time, so if you are Canadian based business – make the switch today, because not only you will save more, but your competition will be making more if you do not.

P.S. - to anyone who cares about their savings.

There are number of predictions of a 1929 economic crash, which will devaluate not only US currency, but will result in an economic depression worldwide. Prominent people such Ron Paul, are openly talking of a monstrous collapse of US currency, with savings evaporating in a blink of an eye. US dollar lost more then 30% of its buying power since 2001 and printing more, only devaluates it more, since in world of fiat currency with which we trade, nothing stands to back it up, be it USD, CAD or EUR.

My advice, and do not listen to it without your own research, is to invest any savings you plan on keeping in precious metals such as Gold and Silver, to secure the value, if there is collapse headed our way. If it is only exists in rumors and we are safe, you will stand to gain from buying/selling process, since an ounce of gold has gone up by more than a 100$ as opposed to 2006 and trades at 820 USD as of now. Whenever dollar goes down, gold goes up so will the savings.

Does Life Stop Without Google

Not only is Google the center of all internet searches, it is also the reason for many jobs, and career paths. All of you bloggers, search engine experts, and webmasters where would you be, if Google did not show up in your life, what would you be doing, and how interesting would internet be for you? Moreover, all of you businesses, both big and small, what will happen to your websites without Google’s traffic? Does life stop without Google?

Just searching for the term Seo, on Google, you will find 184,000,000 listing, and I like to believe that Google’s existence is what encouraged these service providers to open businesses.

Google is like a huge giant that creates opportunities, risks, and generates profit for itself and for its users at the same time. But, what if you are not part of Google’s circle. What if, as a company listed on Google, you get penalized and banned from it. Will your website turn into a ghost town then? I truly believe so; this is why it is important to have a backup plan. Just incase you get on Google’s wrong side one day, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Do not depend entirely on Google’s traffic; allow a 10% room for other sources to affect your traffic. Note, that by other sources, I do not necessarily mean MSN, Yahoo, and AOL. The following strategy is not only more reliable, but it will also make you a better webmaster.

Hook Your Subscribers:

With your e-mail list, build a subscribers list, and provide them with interesting articles, blogs, and news regarding your industry and market. Make them come back to your website regularly as a point of reference. Build credibility by announcing relevant information, and important facts. Focus on your subscribers needs, and satisfy their cravings for knowledge, if you focus on just building traffic, you would loose the quality in your content.

PR:

Keep your website in touch with all the social news, both online and offline. Having a website does not mean that you limit your self to virtual media. Make sure that the social media you link your self too is of high credibility especially that their image will be extended into yours.

LINK YOURSELF:

We all know the importance of links, just look at Wikipedia, and you’ll understand the essentiality of links.

Initiate a forum :

Other than starting a forum, you have the choice of buying one, or taking a selected advertising agreement. Linking yourself with communities will build a sustainable amount of traffic.

SEO Link Building - WATCHOUT!

Link building is essentially the most important tactic of raising your search visibility, however there a few myths mixed with truly ethnical SEO link building strategies.

Link building software.

It doesn’t work. You can stop right here before spending next couple of hours reading reviews and comparing search engine optimization link building software. First of all, Google won’t allow webmasters off the hook that easily, second you cannot submit to human edited websites. Google has build a reputation by providing the most relevant results in the world and will not jeopardize it. SEO link building software might do what it promised – submit your site to numerous directories, but it will fail to live up to the promise(if one was given) of raising your page rank.

Not to confuse with link popularity software.

Relevant and quality directories require verification before submission eliminating the chance of auto scripts, meaning SEO link building software will not work. Some SEO link building software might allow you to enter security clearance(usually presented in a form of an image, asking you to enter letters appearing in the image) via its interface, but this can be achieved very well by hand.

No one looks at directories, at least all-in-one type. Truly relevant business directories perform human audit or ask for a round figure. If you set out a goal of directory submission, go after directory traffic, not after SEO link building. Here is a list of the some of very authoritative directories in their respective fields, which stand a high chance of giving you targeted visitors.

Business.com
Kompass (B2B search engine)
DMOZ
The Us Yellow Pages
Alibaba (trade, watchout scam)
Fraser (trade)
World Wide Web Virtual Library

Search Engine Submission software.

That’s a good one. Tie your running shoes and prepare for a marathon in the opposite direction, it’s a blatant lie. You only require to submit once, or once a year if it comes to that. Free submission.

SEO Link building tactic.

Links can bought, earned, arranged or _______ leave that one to you.

Reciprocal linking – you-link-to-me = I-link-to-you. Start off by offering value and relevancy. Webmasters will not exchange unless you have some value. A couple of useful articles will do for the start, try not to recycle though.

One way links. It is not likely you will succeed by requesting links only your way, however you stand a high chance of getting it through value, that is people will link to you on their own initiative. This can be achieved by writing or developing unique material and submitting to social bookmarking sites like digg and del.icio.us. It can very tricky, so prepare for some tough work. In their majority people across social bookmarking spectrum do not recognize “good” and bury those who submit only for SEO link building. They need exceptional and unique. You can go for offensive, extremely funny , extremely unique or extremely useful, otherwise articles get buried deep in the memory hole. Do not limit yourself to written content, people will appreciate pretty much anything - so roll up your sleeves and release the passion sitting tight, deep in the depth of your inner self =).

Useful can do, but that will require reciprocal linking at first, since you have to get visibility in order for people to find it.

Search engine optimization professional. You can hand over the task to SEO professional, for a flat fee, pick a transparent one who is open to discuss how he achieves it.

Press releases. Press release is another good way to get a one way link. There is a number of free-for-all submission services as well as pay-we-write for-you websites. Pricing can range from $80 and up, depending on the organization and their PR level.

Search for relevant sites to exchange links with:

Do a manual search on major search engines with:

  • “add url”
  • “add site”
  • “submit site”
  • “submit url”

For example seo link building “add url” and so on.

Internal links.

Thought somewhat not related, it is imperative to optimize as much as possible. A good way is to use bread crumb and every page:

Index>Information>SEO>Link Building>________

It eases the job for search engine spiders, since by their nature they follow every link found. Another useful method is to use sitemaps. A sitemap is the page that contains all the link included on the website. You can hand over the job to Google and let its software create one for you.

SEO Link building research.

More and more of it, by far the most effective way to your PR.

Don’t trust anyone and find SEO link building strategy that works. Don’t trust this article, go out and do your own testing. There is a lot of disinformation floating around on the web, not only in terms of search engine optimization. Here is a list of useful resources, however do not take anyone’s words, I can tell SEOs and link builders will not let their secrets float around, so the best way is testing and getting down to business on your own terms.

Amazon Kindle – Digital Book Reader.

There is a lot of buzz around a new Amazon Kindle book reader / news aggregator and since we did not mention it, here is our review.

If you are not familiar - Kindle is new brainchild of Amazon, set out to be released on December 3rd according to the official line. It’s primary purpose is to download and read books from 88,000 Amazon digital selection - wherever you are, whatever you do. Kindle also awards users with the ability to aggregate blogs and news feeds from across the net, giving it a title of a self updating newspaper. This flexibility is achieved through the Sprint’s EV-DO network, and due to their agreement, Kindle users will not have to worry about wireless bills - it will be a part of Amazon service called “Amazon Whispernet”, weird name, but I guess it’s more appealing to women.

Kindle

Amazon Kindle - 2 minute introduction.

KindleAmazon Kindle features a full QWERTY keyboard and a scroll wheel on the upper right hand corner, for an easy navigation through your books and Amazon e-book store. Before downloading, you will be able to preview demos and read a couple of chapters to get a full feel of the book.

Its electronic paper screen gives you a sense of real life book, and eliminates the problem of sun glare. There are a number of usability tricks, like auto bookmaking, dictionary and so on, but those can be considered “standard packaging” for a device of this nature. Kindle also features access to Wikipedia via its EV-DO link.

Positives:

  • Big screen
  • Wide Selection of books (88.000 and counting)
  • No monthly plans
  • Can purchase and listen to audio files – songs and audiobooks
  • Can upload PDF, Word and other documents via USB or email

Negatives:

  • Who designed it? Boy it looks ugly(in my opinion)!
  • Cannot browse regular internet
  • Black and white display

I guess Amazon almost hit the target, and it should have been a long time we had a similar device(lets leave out sony reader). I believe the biggest setback of this Kindle wonder is no access to regular internet. People want to ride on the beloved super highway anywhere they go and if you are getting this close, why not let us? This is probably the question many people are asking, thought of course we have to take into account the fact that Amazon does own the network and Sprint has to make money, but heck do we care? =).

KindleKindle got a lot of good stuff jammed in it. E-books on Amazon range between $1-3 dollars and 10 dollars for bestsellers, so Kindle will do a wonderful job for what it was designed - reading books, a lot of books.

I had a question of how to add the news feeds and RSS subscriptions to the device, since there is no direct access to the internet and was a little bit disappointed after reading:

“More than 250 top blogs from the worlds of business, technology, sports, entertainment, and politics, including BoingBoing, Slashdot, TechCrunch, ESPN’s Bill Simmons, The Onion, Michelle Malkin, and The Huffington Post—all updated wirelessly throughout the day.”

It seems Kindle will be limited to a preselected set of feeds so we’ll not able to get Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Land on the run =) Bad.

Give it a minute, it might change the way you read!

P.S.
It will cost $400 USD.

Wikipedia hacks - from Black Hat SEO to CIA.

The idea of “anyone can share” made Wikipedia stunning success. 4,397,536 inbound links, 294,000,000 results for wikipedia, no site outranks almighty Wiki. PhDs, engineers, mathematicians and bored individuals have found a wonderful hobby – sharing the knowledge. It seems Wiki dominates half of all searches on Google and both sides are happy. Wiki gets its traffic, Google shows relevant results, and on top of it people find what they are looking for… or do they?

SEO Black Hat love Wiki.

In a wonderful article on SEO moz The Dark Side of Wikipedia, randfish details tactics used by SEOs to manipulate beloved Wiki, outlining tricks deployed by black hatters and grey mixers, in attempts to carry some of Wikipedias’ power to their domain. You have to appreciate the level of innovation.

“Wiki-Hacker created several accounts on different IPs, then vandalized a number of pages, mostly small and under-the-radar, appearing to look like a competitor (adding links, references, promotional content, etc). He then “investigated” these pages through his trusted account, “found” the “spammers,” removed their content, and was praised by some other community editors. Later, he used the newfound trust to create subtle, but effective references for his own client.”

Account buys, competitive spam, promotion, links – wiki hacks are ingenious. The amount of effort put forth by participants is staggering and as bad as it might sound, it has earned them the unofficial license to promote.

“…….popular project page called WikiProject Spam, where a “spamstar of glory” (yes, seriously) is awarded for stopping spammers on Wikipedia. A fairly immense to-do list exists on this page, and it’s actually one of the Wiki-Hackers’ most feared pages. Unfortunately, it’s also a tool - Wiki-Hackers who want information removed or who want to build up the “trust” of their own accounts will actually become spam investigators and reporters. One of the best ways to reach administrator level is actually to catch some of the “trusted” accounts that are actually other Wiki-Hackers, and thus the community of Wiki-Hackers is not on particularly good terms with one another. Turning in other hackers puts you above suspicion in a way that few other actions on Wikipedia can, and thus, it’s one of the holy grails of the infiltrator-style hackers.”

The intrigues spin as in a political thriller taking the observers on the joyous ride as they observe the battles from a distance.

It does not stop at SEO.

Speaking of politics, a very interesting tool called wikiscanner was released by Virgil Griffith, neural-systems graduate student. Wikiscanner tracks anonymous edits on Wikipedia by I.P. address, which sometimes lead to some very controversial places. According to an article on wired.com by John Borland, Diebold was caught red handed deleting material critical of itself. Diebold is the firm that supplies electronic voting platforms to the US govt., which received vast criticism over the years.

Another case according to BBC, involved CIA operatives vandalizing and correcting articles about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Reuters had reported them editing Iraq and Guantanamo entries.

The changes may violate Wikipedia’s conflict-of-interest guidelines, a spokeswoman for the site said on Thursday. – Reuters.

So what is Wikipedia in reality? Though a wonderful source, it has become a playground for powerful interests and SEO black hatters. I do not want to put a bad face on Wiki and believe that editors, who sacrifice their own time and put immense efforts to keep the online encyclopedia going deserve medals of honor from us for the hard work they have and continue to do, however Wikipedia should not be trusted in its entirety and it is always a good idea to check multiple sources.

First Google Server!

This is a picture of a $200 billion server. Does not look too advanced, but it started the fastest and the most successful company in the new millennium.

Sun Ultra II with dual 200 MHz processors, and 256MB of RAM, according to Wikipedia.

Google server
This is the same machine, reminding of the first roots. I bet Google could sell it for at least a million dollars =). Google’s first spider crawled pages at the rate of 100 per second, with six different browsers simultaneously.

Google server

As time went by and Larry and Sergey put their Phds. on hold and dedicated themselves to the growth of their genius. They maxed out their credit cards and bought more hardware to build their first server farm.

Google farm

Google got it’s first major investment from Andy Bechtolsheim one of the founders of Sun Microsystems in 1998, who wrote them a check for $100.000 after quickly viewing a demo. From that point on Google Inc. was formed, Larry and Sergey were on the roll. Company quickly grew starting to attract new investments, contracts and audience all across the country. Two years later Google signed an agreement with Yahoo! to provide search results and by 2001, according to SearchEngineWatch had received $7.1 million for the search queries it handled. Yahoo! did not pursue further contacts, when it was clear Google was becoming a big challenge for the company.

As of today, it is speculated that Google is valued at over $200 billion dollars, employing 15,916 full-time staff (September 30, 2007) , maintaining 450,000 servers, continuing to grow at the speed of light.

You can see more pictures of the very first Google servers and explore a virtual Google museum.

Gmail Email Deletion Problematic

A Gmail user had the nasty surprise to see all her inbox completely empty when she opened her Gmail account, on October 27. Unfortunately for her, she lost several important messages, some of which were essential for a work project.

Another user also find out that all her 2007 messages had disappeared from her inbox.

Lately, there has been several users complaining about this problem on blogs and forums, such as on the official Gmail Help forum.

Due to respect for confidentiality, a Google spokesman refused to comment specifically about this matter. However, he stated that “the majority of these problems is the result of a phishing attack or a leak of passwords - also sometimes messages are removed by error or are identified as spam - which is not a problem of data corruption on our servers.

Google had replied to many users saying that this problematic was not the result of a technical difficulty from their systems and that they should change their password, apparently “compromised“, according to the search engine.

Moral of the story: You should always change your passwords regularly and copy and paste the content of your important messages in a separate document such as Microsoft Word, or at least forward them to another email account just in case something happened; you will then have a saved copy.

Writers Strike – good for the web, bad for the TV.

So… the Hollywood is on fire, shows are behind schedule, prime time TV is the only TV. Bored public wondering what to do? Wonderful, let it burn. =)

If you are not aware of the writers strike, here is a quick run down of the events that took place and why.

Writers Guild of America which has more then 12.000 members, decided to hit fat, corporate networks by going on a long lasting strike. It took off about a week ago on Monday November the 5th and is still under way as of November 15, 2007.

Writers all across the mighty States are not happy with their pay, and want a piece from DVD, internet and mobile sales, which the corporate studious fiercely refuse to give out.

What the networks do when they run out of linkbaits?

So far the biggest impact was on the nightly talk shows, which many viewers have figured out are scripted. As a back up, broadcast stations will start recycling older recordings and substitute with “strike proof”, writer free American Idols. A lot of speculation is going around an increased number of reality and game shows, which are set out to be cloned as a substitute for missing series.

How does it all relate to the internet?

As Washington Post put it:

“According to one theory, all those reruns and reality the networks plan to air might chase you onto the Web for your entertainment binges. Some of you (this theory predicts) will be so pleased with what you find online, you’ll never watch TV the same way again.”

Expect new, healthy wave of human online traffic to arrive very soon. Bored Joes and Marries will go out on the web to feed the addiction, and hopefully never come back to TV again. A quick introduction to television and what it does to the brain is wonderfully summed up in this short, but powerful 3 minute video.

Writers have got on a strike with best intentions on their mind, however the move is taking place at the time, when television can least afford it.

Considering the the review of IBM’s predictions on advertising market, we can say with confidence - the days of traditional advertising are limited and are making a major shift towards the world wide web. It is only going to get accelerated with the writers strike for which we have to show our gratitude, and say thank you to the 12.000 participating souls.
