Link building from the perspective of SEO professionals.

Wiep.net released Link Value Factor Questionnaire with 17 SEO Professional link building participants.

link buldingThe Questionnaire is done in the same style as Search Ranking Factor by SEO Moz, with some of the most prominent SEO link building figures answering the questions. A total of 40 different factors are discussed, and link building pros give their input as to how important each factor is, by assigning importance weight from 1 to 5. Number 1 being “weak influence” while number 5 is “strong influence”

When all 17 professionals answer the question, wiep.net rounds it up and gives us the total.

This is the best way to talk about SEO, since there is no such thing as knowing something for sure in the world of optimization. Thought algorithms are somewhat decoded, having pros share their everyday experience with public is priceless.

SEO Moz was the first site to come with such an idea and interviewed prominent figures such a Danny Sullivan and Barry Schwartz where they got in detail over on page factors. Wiep.net focuses solely on link building.

Another great resource to look at is from Search Enigne Watch by Chris Sherman, where he presents us with 131 (Legitimate) Link Building Strategies.

Presidental Candidates for 2008 US Election – search perspective.

People’s Reloveution.

Spending quite some time on the internet, you’ve probably heard about Dr. Ron Paul. No matter what industry, blog or forum, SEO, marketing, electronics, entertainment – this name surfaces everywhere and is becoming hard to ignore. It seems that every prominent blog has mentioned him, or at the very least wrote a recap on presidential candidates for 2008 election. It is time to bring it to SEO Expert Blog and look at Dr. Paul from the perspective we all understand – search.

Before we get into why, lets look at leading candidates in terms of their search presence. For this purpose, I’ve picked five names, which I believe have the biggest chance of being elected.

  • Barack Obama
  • John McCain
  • Hillary Clinton
  • Rudy Giuliani
  • Ron Paul

Lets Examine candidates by search results from the big 3.

Google

Ron Paul 5,750,000
Hillary Clinton 3,640,000
Barack Obama 1,300,000
Rudy Giuliani 589,000
John McCain 383,000

Yahoo

Ron Paul 210,000,000
Hillary Clinton 148,000,000
John McCain 67,800,000
Rudy Giuliani 60,900,000
Barack Obama 31,000,000

Live

Ron Paul 43,700,000
Hillary Clinton 18,800,000
John McCain 4,940,000
Rudy Giuliani 2,850,000
Barack Obama 386,000

Dr. Paul is clear leader, while Hilary steadily follows him in second place. McCain is last on Google, however he charges onto the third spot on Yahoo and Live. Giuliani and Obama seem to be at the bottom.

What does Alexa have to say about Presidential candidates?

Five Official websites were compared, over the period of six month.

www.ronpaul2008.com
www.hillaryclinton.com
www.barackobama.com
www.johnmccain.com
www.joinrudy2008.com

presidental grpah
(graph had to be cut to 400px in order to fit, Jun and July is left out, where Hilary has a spike similar to that of Ron Paul – blue)

Ron Paul is leading the pack by a notable margin, while Obama and Hilary dominate other candidates. A large spike in November for Ron Paul seems to closely correspond to November 5th, when Dr. Paul raised 4.5$ Million in one day. As supporters coined it – money bomb.

What do keyword research tools say about presidential candidates?

Word Tracker

Ron Paul 12811
Hillary Clinton 6777
Barack Obama 4174
John Mccain 1395
Rudy Giuliani 1421

Dr. Paul is leading the curve on Word Tracker by at least double the amount of searches over his opponents. Hillary and Obama follow him, just as on Google search count.

Keyword Discovery.

Barack Obama 35293
Hillary Clinton 30064
Ron Paul 10328
John Mccain 7042
Rudy Giuliani 4221

Keyword discovery makes Senator Obama number one, followed very closely by Hillary. Other candidates crawl far behind them.

Nichebot Classic.

Ron Paul 7,264
Hillary Clinton 3,843
Barack Obama 2,367
John Mccain 791
Rudy Giuliani 806

Nichebot classic lined up candidates in same manner as Google and Word Tracker, with Paul leading the pack by at least double the amount of searches.

Is internet an indicator?

There are 300 million people living in the States, with over 200 million internet users. Do they represent the majority? Dr. Paul is a clear leader, if it does. Is this an army of dedicated supporters, digging and spammining every political forum available?

Does raising 4.5 millions in one day have true political impact?

December 16th Promises to raise ten millions and set another world record. People are buying Dr. Paul personal blimp, and most surprisingly, all of this goes without any input from the candidate himself. They do it, but why?

I guess this excerpt answers the question, and as SEO BlackHat put it: “It got me thinking.”

“The eye-popping reality of the situation is this. No longer can it be said that Ron Paul is running for President. Amazingly enough, his candidacy has been hijacked, and it appears now that the people are running for President. . . through Ron Paul! That’s the true revolution about which your neighbors are speaking.”

Who do you want to jot? Myself. Now you can blog without touching the keyboard!

I was browsing through the news today and a very interesting article got my attention on PR NewsWire. It goes like this:

“Jott Networks today announced the ability to create Google(TM) Calendar appointments while away from the PC — using one’s voice. Jott.com’s free voice-to-text service will link users directly to Google Calendar after a simple set up. Users may also elect to receive an SMS confirming the calendar entry.”

That’s pretty cool, I thought. Entering calendar notes with your voice, something that remained unknown to me. Since I have a snoopy nose, I decided to investigate.

Quickly copied “Jott.com” into my firefox search box, and surely, Google gave me the site. “Thank you Google” I thought – click.

Orange interface met me, with a simple layout. Without giving it a second, I pressed on the “Sign up now” button, which landed me on the page with four fields to fill out. “Thanks god” I thought, no lengthy forms, quick an easy. Next minute an email prompted me to confirm registration – sure thing.

Surprise surprise! Jott is asking for my phone number! I was sure as a brick wall the recoring was going to go through the microphone. Hmmm, my phone number you say? As if Jott read my thoughts, it was there looking at me, with innocent eyes of a baby girl.

“Jott is currently only available to US and Canadian subscribers.
Your phone number will never be sold or shared for marketing purposes without your permission. Standard text messaging rates will apply.”

Somewhere on the site I noticed Google’s Logo, Amazon and Yahoo – they must be for real. Heck with it, lets give them my number. Quickly filled out the fields, impatiently slammed “Continue”, and Jott asked me to call them. Sure thing – dial the number, a pretty voice greeted my ears saying I have to press some buttons. Hmmm, a second later I Notice:

Trouble?
* Make sure caller id is not blocked
* Calling from the USA and cant get it to work? Call (347) 523-8843
* Calling from Canada? Call (647) 724-5814”

Must be the case, lets call another number. Dialed (647) 724-5814 another pretty lady spoke to me congratulating and thanking me for sigining up with Jott. A quick demo followed suite and she explained how it all works.

The coolest thing I’ve seen on the net!

So how does it all work?

Here’s the layout.

You call Jott from your cell, tell them a keyword of what you want to do and they email or post the recording, both in print and in audio format. For example, if I was to make a note I would say: “myself” , then record what I want to say. In turn, Jott would save it in my online account and email me the copy.

Pretty neat. The chilliest thing of all – it does a darn good job of translating your voice into printed words!

You enjoying the sunshine on the palm beach, while the air smoothly wraps up around your body? Hell, you can still blog! That’s right you can blog when you’re not even close to your computer. Talk to Jott and it will do the rest!

You can pick from a multitude of services, and it seems Jott covered it all.

  • Blogger
  • Google Calendar
  • WordPress
  • Amazon
  • Yahoo Groups
  • Typepad
  • many more

Enter the address, your login info – lock n load, ready to roll. Speak to your phone and Jott will blog it.

So what’s the catch?

As far as I see it – there is no catch. Services are free and Jott is probably hoping to build strong community, which of course is the surest path to hmmmm, fortunes. I wish them the best of all!

I have to say, I’m still amazed this is possible, but heck, why don’t you go try it for yourself?

P.S.

The post below was done by Jot =).

What is the hottest item this Christmas?

According to Hitwise, the most searched item in the UK this Christmas season is Nintendo Wii, with a rise of 278% over 2006. Out of all searches done in the UK 0.19% are for Nintendo gaming platform.

wii graph

Just how much of Britain’s search traffic for Wii translates into cash?

0.19% Means 21.932.080 CAD dollars.

According to Internet World Stats there are 37,600,000 internet users in the UK. According to Comscore, little more then a half of all internet surfers search via search engines. If we round it up, assuming that half of all British internet users use search engines, and divide 37,600,000 by 2, this will give us 18,800,000.

0.19 percent of 18,800,000 equals to 35,720 unique searches for Wii in UK alone.

According to Amazon.co.uk an average price for Nintendo Wii is around 300 pounds. 300 GBP converted into Canadian Dollars gives us $614 CAD.

$614 times 35,720 = 21.932.080 Canadian Dollars assuming every searcher will buy Nintendo Wii.

Lets calculate the actual profit margin.

Google’s market share in Britain is 70% so out of 35,720 searchers for Nintendo, 25,004 are Google users.

The average profit margin from high tech gadgets such iPhone, PS3 and Wii is around 9%.

9% of $614(300GBP) equals to $55.26 made from every Nintendo. Now, lets multiple total number of Google searchers for Wii by this profit margin. The following equation will give us:

25,004 times 55.26 = 1.375.220 million Canadian Dollars.

Majority of online searches do not get past the third page in their search, hence they will have a choice of an average of 30 websites that will appear on Google and 8 paid listings per page. This means that 54 websites will roughly share 1.375.220 million CAD dollars between each other, which gives us $25.467 of pure net profit this Christmas season per site.

Do you feel the power of search marketing yet?

It is not a fact that each and every person who searched for Wii will purchase one, however a good percentage will. A number of people will order it online, some will look for a local shop, but considering Google’s 70% market share in the UK, top listings showing up for Wii this Christmas season in organic listings and PPC are going to bank roll.

Internet Gangsters.

I’ve spend almost 2 hours today digging through my feed reader, looking for stories. Four topics got started, but never took off… so I decided to write about something I’ve done in the past and how to avoid some mistakes I made, as well as obstacles you may run into.

Hot topic – internet business.

You are hot and hyped about the idea? Got the chills running and thoughts bombarding your conscious of the success you will achieve?

Time to take a cold shower and cool off.

Whatever you got in mind, do the research or as it’s called market analysis. You may hear this a lot, but I ignored it like many and made a big mistake.

Luckily, there is an easy way.

Ask yourself a question, what are the things that will play a key role in your future business?

Search Engines, Ebay, Trading Platforms, Directories?

It is important to identify key players in the overall plan. Internet has its own set of rules just like the offline world and you have to get the public to know about yourself, however strategies differ.

One of the greatest market research tools at our disposal are keyword research tools. One might argue: What they gots to do with my market research, I aint optimizing?
Bad, you should. Apart from optimization, research tools show demand for the products, while Google search count shows the supply. Combine the two together – you got pretty good market intelligence – supply&demand.

Here is a list of free for all keyword research tools:

SEO book keyword research tool
SEO Expert tool
WordTracker free keyword research tool
Nichebot Classic

Simply enter the words you believe people will use to search for your products and then analyze the results. This will show the demand. Now go to Google and search with that keyword, on the top right hand side you will find the number of pages Google has in store for that term. Now you know the supply. Of course the slimmer the ratio the better, however in some cases you will not be able to find out the demand for something fairly new.

Also check supply and demand on eBay. Look for your items, but make sure to click on completed listings only, and eBay will generate sold items over the past 6 month with a price tag next to them

Ebay.

The mighty bay. Started as a forum where people privately traded their merchandize based solely on trust. As the site grew, so did the need for a secure platform, hence eBay was born. There seems to be a lot of talk around success stories that eBay gave birth to, which are all true, however with massive exposure come a lot of false players.

internet moneyIf you’ve done any research on the topic you would notice a lot of gurus, selling Insider Secrets, offering millions of products to dropship, claiming they will take your hand and put a million in it, if you sign up for an exclusive offer.

Through many months at search engines, directories and countless websites I can say those words with confidence, experiencing it first hand – there is a billion dollar industry built around on scamming people who hope to start new internet/eBay business.

It is astonishing, the multitude surpasses genuine online shops and goodwill businesses. As example lets take eBay. Fairly new user will jump on the opportunity and will start researching the steps on establishing a successful business.

Traps on the way.

Trap number 1: Dropship.

Very soon an idea of finding the products will arise, and it seems a quick and easy solution exists. If you are not familiar with the concept of dropshipping – here is the run down. Say a distributor has merchandize you want to sell. Distributor can you give you the rights to resell it’s stock, without ever seeing it. Such a company will set up an account giving you the ability to access its stock remotely. Your job is to sell it, and simply order through the distributor the item you sold. Once ordered you must specify the address of the person who bought it from you. Kind of a middleman role, between the distributor and the buyer, where difference in wholesale price and your retail mark is the profit.

It is a good model, but you will spend quite some time looking for a genuine company, because they do not advertise online, or at the very least, you will not find them on search engines. Go to Google and type Dropship – 98% out of 2,310,000 results are scam, your task is to find 2% which are not =).

Not exactly scam, but as some one put it: “It is legal, kind of.” Though many companies position themselves to be “real deal” you can quickly spot those who are lying. No company has millions of products available, except maybe Ingram and Techdata, but that is different story.

What those companies do, is they position themselves between you and a real distributor, develop online platform and simply order products from the distributor, which you order from them to your customer. They add an extra link, which is costing money and quality. If for some reason they reject the order, you will be left with an angry customer who paid and wants it now. Not a good thing. Watch out.

Trap number 2: Wholesale

Assume dropship isn’t exactly what you are looking for and you want physical goods, on your hands. We see scammers hopping in again, smiling wide – another solution for you =). The concept is the same as above, but this time they will reduce the price a bit, which will not be competitive at all.

Here is a couple of names to stay away from, though I haven’t tried any, you can be quite confident they are after you wallet:

Doba – they somehow managed to negotiate an agreement with eBay to become “trusted” partner. Just search for feedback on the company – it is self evident. My guess would be, due to its aggressive marketing and affiliate network, Doba is one the first names to surface for an unsuspecting user, therefore creating nice revenues for the owners. Ebay loves its stock going up, and a degree of interest from Doba in exchange for trusted link probably sealed the deal.

Salehoo.
Dropship Land

The list can be long, so to make it shorter – a genuine company will ask for legal info such as Tax ID, Vendor Permit as so on. Anyone who doesn’t – is looking to suck out some money without giving anything back.

Trap number 3: Wholesale/Dropship Lists.

A number of companies claim to have all the distributors(or as people like to call them wholesalers) in one place, ready and waiting for you. A quick question to ask yourself – why would they be selling this information when they can themselves make money with it? A quick answer – because it is worthless. No matter what they promise, stay away.

One exception can be probably made, which is Worldwide Brands. I haven’t tried them, but it seems people have good feedback, as the founder has a talk show and employs an army of researchers working full time. More info here.

Trap number 4: Trade directories.

There is a huge number of B2B platforms available online, which allow you both to sell and buy products in wholesale quantities. Be extra careful, as I would say about at least 60% of both buy and sell offers are scam. The most colorful examples would be

Alibaba
Made-in-China

china factoryWhere I think about 80% of all sale offers are either Chinese or Indonesian scammers. Some will go out of their way to get your money and will have UK, US looking phone numbers, will ship you “product samples” and so on.

As you go on doing business with Chinese suppliers, most genuine manufacturers will require a minimum order starting somewhere at $10.000 depending on the industry.

Scammers paradise. They don’t have to hunt for change – deals can be struck right here, convincing websites and fake phished information do the trick. There is a number of horror stories where people were ripped off for 50.000$ US and more.

It can be quite hard to spot scammers without physical representation in that country to do the check up, however as you browse potential partners look out for the following:

Prices. Experienced scammers know it is better to keep pricing at the market level, but newer players will chop it down quite a bit, sometimes to unreal offers. Though it doesn’t work as good, it gets the attention of some people, especially new crowds.

Payment. A genuine factory/distributor will not likely have a payment section, though it is a possibility I would suggest to stay away from all foreign websites that do, as through my experience they all turned out to be scam.

Communication: Scammers tend to call you “Dear” “Darling” and so on and are usually willing to talk on MSN, Yahoo messenger, AOL and other messengers.

Do not be lured by the “GOLD” “PLATINUM” memberships. I had one guy tell me (I was posing as a woman)

“Darling I am a gold supplier, what else do you need.”

It costs 6000$ to get gold membership on Aliababa and $600 for trustpass. It is nothing more then a marketing trick for suppliers and a way to make money for trade portals. If a scammer pulled off a profitable prank a week ago, it would only be logical for him to invest $6000 and get that GOLD status.

Trap number 5: All in One solution.

Good example is right here.

sopranosI just Googled it on random, but it is obvious what they are up to =). It is legal, but expect them to ask you to invest more, as you will be starving for traffic with unsellable prices.

It just doesn’t work that way. Those “businesses” have a number of ready to go templates and a number of outsourced middleman dealers, who will be processing the order, which will not come anyway, due to high prices and no traffic. Ugly, but true.

Back to the blueprints!

Offtopic, but it goes as Joseph Campbell put it:

“Follow your Bliss and the Universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.”

I think that sums it up. Research, research and research that’s the best thing you can do, unless there is a million dollar idea swirling in your head aka Facebook style =), which was stolen by it’s founder anyway =)))))).

Good luck.

Linkwars – Google not happy about paid links.

paid linksGoogle has not been happy about paid links that pass on ranking power and it seems like Googlepplex team is taking further steps to diffuse the problem.

On the official Google blog Matt Cutts and Maile Ohye have posted another update as to why it is a bad practice to buy and sell links that affect the rankings.

“If, however, a webmaster chooses to buy or sell links for the purpose of manipulating search engine rankings, we reserve the right to protect the quality of our index. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank violates our webmaster guidelines. Such links can hurt relevance…”

Matt Cutts went further and on his own blog, and gave an extreme example of a paid review on a very sensitive subject which was poorly executed and could cost people their health.

Google so far made it very clear that they do not like paid links that affect search position and are taking steps to minimize the impact. Googlers are not alone on this issue, as Yahoo, Ask and Microsoft seem to share the same ground.

What do webmasters think about this?

Webmasters and SEOs seem to understand the steps carried out by Google, which are ultimately aimed at preserving the quality of search results, however there are a number of SEOs who are not too hype about it.

Some discussions.
Offical Word From Google About Paid Links – Cre8asiteforums.

Matt Cutts & Maile Ohye on buying / selling links – Search Enigne Watch

New Post from Matt Cutts on on Paid Links/Blog Posts... – Digital point

More on Search Engine roundtable.

People have mouths to feed. Right or wrong, some people will do whatever it takes to pay their bills. That’s just a fact of life. Expecting people to follow rules is unrealistic.” – Shpinn

I think it’s excellent that you are now doing your utmost to educate webmasters about the paid links issue in more public arenas than
personal blogs and search marketing conferences.
” – Google Groups.

Google team made it crystal clear, they do not want paid links and are taking the steps to crack down on the practice. There two very different views on this, which can’t seem to come to an agreement.

Expect more algo updates and devaluations in a campaign to maintain the highest quality of search results at it always been since the birth of Google.
