Danny Search 4.0

Danny wrote another column titled Search 4.0

Key highlights:

  • Search 1.0 (1996): Pages ranked using “on-the-page” criteria

Danny noted that search engines are going to be reliant on behavior data and human editors more, but we think he mentioned it too early. There is no doubt that search engines are tracking click rate, number of searches, time spent on site and other behavior indicators, but off page and on page remain THE key.

Danny hurried with this one. There’s no doubt that behavior is going to a big part of future algorithms, but it is not so now. To put it into perspective – a fella said it was digital era 5 years before one could say so. He wasn’t wrong, digital era was coming, but he proclaimed it too early. Same with Search 4.0 – it’s coming, but we’re not there yet.

Last time we mentioned how to organize leaked AOL keywords into excel spreadsheets. This time lets actually use this leaked keyword data.

Lets focus on keyword marketing analysis. Copy all the keywords that come up with your filters to the new file, from all 40 AOL spreadsheets. This way you have all data in one convenient place.

Depending on your niche you may end up with 200 to 50.000 keywords. Most will be repeated. Don’t delete them.

Go through the list carefully. See what people are searching for. Kill two birds with one shot.

Marketing Analysis.

Bird number one.

If keyword(especially long tail) is searched by many users – it is a clear indication that searchers want to see / know / use what they search for. (for example “mortgage calculator”, or “interest rate history”).

Identify keywords that are widely repeated. Identify what users want to see and analyze actual pages that Google directed them to (thanks to AOL we can see this). Bingo – you now know what some of your potential customers want / need to see in order to feel confident doing business with you. Create whatever it is they want, feature it in information structure and you’re one step closer to better persusion architecture.

Also look at extra long tail keywords. Those may be searched by 1 – 3 individuals, but chances are, other people had exactly the same question during their buying process. Identify those keywords and feature appropriate content where needed.

SEO and AOL Keywords

The second bird to kill is SEO. Since you identified keywords for marketing research purposes and took the initiative to create appropriate content, don’t leave out SEO. In your new content, populate targeted keywords and get some SERP visibility!

You can also hit long tail purely for traffic. I suggest some analysis first, but if you’re only after traffic this can work just as well.

“A $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit challenging YouTube’s ability to keep copyrighted material off its popular video-sharing site threatens how hundreds of millions of people exchange all kinds of information on the Internet, YouTube owner Google Inc. said.

Viacom said it had identified more than 150,000 unauthorized clips of copyrighted programming — including “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “South Park” and “MTV Unplugged” episodes and the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” — that had been viewed “an astounding 1.5 billion times.

.To the contrary, the availability on the YouTube site of a vast library of the copyrighted works of plaintiffs and others is the cornerstone of defendants’ business plan,” Viacom said.” – Yahoo News.

How do they expect to stop millions of people uploading what they like? Go Google!

AOL Leaked Keywords Data May 23 2008.

AOL Leaked keyword List 20 million search queries

Over ~650 online users, 3 months data. Data is sorted by user number, showing 3 months search history. Get your copy here.

Organize AOL Leaked Keywords

Leaked keywords are from AOL search database(Google powered search), sorted in columns. Each file is over 200 MB in size and takes 4 FULL excel spreadsheets(total 40 spreadsheets, 4 per file)

You can export AOL leaked keywords into your own database or use excel as I did. The recommendation is to use a searchable database, but if you’re limited, excel does a good job too. If you have 2007 excel, open it up and go to the “Data” tab. (in 2003 go to Import in the file menu)

Import to Excel

On the left top side find this icon (2007)

Click on it and leave everything as is. Start importing. Excel will choke for a bit since each AOL .txt is over 200MB so give it some time.

It notify you it cannot fit all data into one spreadsheet. Click OK and let it import whatever can fit.

Once finished you should have one full spreadsheet of leaked AOL keywords.

The Tricky Part

One .TXT file takes 4 spreadsheets. Once you imported first part you got 3 more to go. This is where Excel goes nuts. If you try to specify a row where it stopped last time, it won’t do anything.

I’ve tried everything and it refuses to work.

The Solution to Import Leaked AOL Keywords to Excel

To solve this problem you will have to open each AOL keyword .TXT file, find the row where you stopped, delete imported data and save the file.

Here’s how to do it.

Go all the way to the bottom of your AOL spreadsheet. At the very bottom, find a key phrase that can be easily searched, for example : “5 year credit card percentage rate information”.

The point is to find a long tail keyword phrase that is easy to search for with CTLR+F command.

Open AOL keyword .TXT file. This is going to take from 2 to 20 minutes, depending on your RAM, so be patient. Avoid heavy duty tasks. Once opened, press CTRL+F and search for the key phrase copied from the bottom of your spreadsheet.

Once you locate the key phrase, select everything behind it. To do this quick use shortcuts. Highlight the keyword(one you searched for) and press SHIFT + CTRL at the same time.

Do not let SHIFT and CTRL go and scroll all the way up using the scroll bar. Once at the top click at the start of the document and all the data will be selected.

Now press BACKSPACE to delete all selection. Give it 2 to 20 minutes. Once deleted, save the keyword document. Give it 2 to 20 minutes.

You’re ready to import AOL leaked keywords into excel again. Go to a new spreadsheet click on this button again to export from .TXT file.

Once finished repeat the process. There are total 10 .TXT files. Each file will give you 4 spreadsheets in a single Excel file.

Once imported you can start organizing AOL leaked keyword data. The first step is to create a “list” in 2003 version or use “filter” function in 2007 version

Online copywriting is different to offline. Some rules are broken, while others emerge on their place. Users spend around 20 seconds examining headlines and navigation before hitting the back button. The copy must speak to the reader on his/her terms of face cold blooded extinction like a weak link from ecosystem(ok it’s not going anywhere, but it won’t deliver the results :) ).

Use basic guidelines to make copy a bit spicier:

Use Active Tense instead of Passive:

Passive: Nancy was invited to a party this Saturday night at 8:00.

Active: Laura invited Nancy to a party this Saturday night at 8:00.

Passive: This book has been translated into sixteen different languages.

Active: Scholars have translated that book into sixteen different languages.

Passive shift the focus from the subject to the object. As you research, you will know that passive is used in sleazy military writings, corporate speak and by politicians. Passive shifts the blame.

Passive: The building was bomber by an airplane

Active: Airplane bombed the building

In the first example its seems that the building somehow bombed itself, while in the second example the focus is very clear.

Joe Lieberman a first move in a clampdown?

Had my eyes popped today reading this headline:

US Senator, Lieberman, Asks For Al-Qaeda Content To Be Removed From YouTube

“US Senator, Joe Lieberman, asked Google’s Eric Schmidt to remove terrorist videos, including those of Al-Qaeda, to be removed from You Tube. In response, Google has removed some of these videos.”

To refresh Mr. Joe Lieberman memory – Al-Qaeda stands for “the database” and was merely a CIA run mercenary organization to fight USSR in the 80s in Afghanistan and was later used to create “the problem” in Serbia in order for the US to offer the “solution”.

What’s different today?

I have not personally researched or even saw a picture of Mr. Joe Lieberman, but this simple request says all there is about this man…

Government should not lay its hands on the internet in any form, especially under the pretense of “national security”. The move seems very minor to an amatuer eye, but this is the way of a totalitarion progression. Take small steps, because large ones can be spotted by the population.

You move towards the goal gradually, with step B being just a little worse than A, and step C being a slightly worse than B and so on… In Germany, almost 10 years before jews were rounded in camps, all german run shops required a sticker: “Deutsches Geschäft” (German Shop).

I’m not blaming Google for compliance, but Pentagon identified internet as a dangerous technology a while ago, because of free, uncentralized, unfiltered flow of information…

Right before 2001 “election” the report was released “Rebuilding Americas Defences“, by people in the office right now.

It highlights: North Korea, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Libya, Lebanon as “dangerous regimes”(targets for takeover in another words) and says their existence justifies the creation of a “world-wide command and control system” – The very nations that are being bombed since. Iraq, Libya and Lebanon already taken over.

“Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor.” - page 63.

It also calls for the creation of “US Space Forces” to dominate space and cyberspace to prevent the “enemies” using the internet. In other words block those who oppose the agenda. We’ve seen it in action when the 2008 elections started and when Dr. Ron Paul was in the game. He wanted to pull out of Iraq and dismantle Federal Reserve system. Myspace.com owned by News Corp. blocked any posts that mentioned Ron Paul. Check video over here.

Government or Pentagon run corporations should not be allowed to touch properties like You Tube.

Google Assigns Dollar Value To Search Results, Adwords Leak.

Google ValueCould Google be assigning dollar value to search results pages?

That’s what guys on ValleyWag Blog have found: This is a a real search results page with what appears to be a monetary value below. The GG Score is $30.73 and it appears that the site is an Adowords advertiser.

Second Picture also shows GG Score, this time including some kind of category and another mysterious variable PVs: Google swears by it’s editorial approach to search, however, the shots above raise some really tough questions. Could this data be used in algorithms for Google ranking? Could Adwords accounts affect natural search rankings? What do the numbers really mean?

From the picture above we can see that lower listing has actually higher monetary value, so it is safe to say that the price does not represent value of each listing, because the assumption is, the higher you are in search the more expensive it is. This was also proved to logical extent by Aaron in his recent report: What is a #1 Google Ranking Worth?.

The number means something else, nevertheless, spooky stuff! I have not personally heard or read that Adwords affected search rankings(apart form the this blog).

Danny at search engine land guessed that Pscore might be quality score and “thresh” is threshold.

Google is very secretive when it comes to sharing internal ranking data, so minor leaks like these spread a lot of buzz in the SEO world.

So how does this help advertisers? Not much. Just interesting stuff.

Yahoo is behind in video blend. Though Yahoo has its’s own hosting platform – Yahoo Video, it is not as widespread and used as the You Tube. Yahoo.com did not feature any videos in search results, loosing out to the big G.

Live did not feature video, just as Yahoo. Unlike Yahoo or Google, Microsoft does not have a video hosting platform, so it’s a bit tricky for it to blend video results.

I once noticed blended video on Google from Metacafe and other websites, not owned by Google. Though it did not directly played in search results, it linked to the video destination. This means that video from other properties can be very well searched, scored and featured in either video search or blended search results. So far Google is leader both in featuring its own property – YouTube and other video hosting properties. Yahoo and Live got to catch up, since this is a clear competitive advantage by Google Inc.

Google gave us variety of choices from its product search engine – Google Product Search. If we click on one of the results, it takes us to very relevant page that features name of the merchant, pricing and whether the merchant uses Google Checkout. The results also specify the exact models, even though the original search was a generic one. As a searcher – I come out a happy creature.

Yahoo did not feature blended results and showed only generic results. Yahoo has “Yahoo Shopping”, which showed up in overall results, but was not featured as a blended option. Yahoo should move to next step and start blending Yahoo shopping with search results, since I was able to find that laptop on Yahoo Shopping itself. This will only increase customer flow to Yahoo shopping channel. It’s got a strong brand, why no use it for shoppers?

Microsoft did not come up with blended option, just like Yahoo. Microsoft has product feed, which is MSN Shopping, so a blend of results is also an option for Microsoft. Maybe they will catch up later on.

For now Google is clear winner in blended search results when it comes to product search.

Live gave exactly the same results, Amazon, followed by the official Grok site.

At book search, every engine is pretty much equal. We searched for a direct book name. Sometimes Google shows book search for unrelated terms, with the philosophy that a correct book will show up. I have not seen this on Yahoo or Live, but then again, I don’t use them enough.

When it comes to search blend, Google comes up a clear leader on most fronts:

  • Local/Maps
  • News
  • Video
  • Product Search

All engines are pretty much equal when it comes to:

  • Images
  • Book Search

If we were to award second place it would be Yahoo, since it got upper foot in local against Microsoft(at least in SERPs).

From SEO perspective it is essential to keep an keep eye on universal search, since it has become default and already takes precious SERP real estate. For example, “SEO” on Google.ca has 2 precious spots reserved for videos, 1 is Matt talking about spam and one from “SEO Rapper” rapping his way about SEO. Video results are considered real results and take precious search spots, leaving only 8 for websites.

Blended is also extra crucial in local search. Your listings can be killed if they are not featured in top 10 “Local Blend”. On 1024×768 – that’s a lot of real estate and personally, 80% of the time, those results are enough to get me what I want.

So blend is an important as keeping yourself toned.

A sign of Defeat from Microsoft?

The drama lasted for 3 months, but the ending was very surprising.

What the hell?! Where’s the meet, blood, lawsuits, billions and hot daily search news? I was hoping Microhoo would supply us with hot lava blog material on daily basis! =). So now all is settled and…

Microsoft is walking away from its only hope in search?

To think that Microsoft can do it alone is to say that my neighbors dog will learn to dance tango! They’re hopeless, at least for now. Ballmer promised to topple Google 5 years ago. May 2008, Google market share is all times high, while MS is sliding in low single digits!

Some critics said that this is tactics, but search engine watch reported today that “Microsoft Releases Proxy Yahoo Board“. They must be for real?

Why this is a total defeat:

  • Microsoft openly admitted they want to compete with Google in search. Many times, especially Mr. Ballmer.
  • Microsoft rolled out Live search for that purpose.
  • Microsoft came up with competing products such as Project Gatineau(Google Analytics), 3D maps(Google Earth) and a load of others.
  • Microsoft signaled defeat in search with Yahoo bid. This is plain obvious.
  • Now they walked away.

We’re defeated and we’re OKAY with it?

That’s unfortunately the message.

Of course there’s plenty of talent at Microsoft, but toppling Google or Yahoo is not easy challenge for a company with no search brand. Live search is unknown, while MSN is at 4%-5%. MSN is largely known as a messenger, not a search brand.

What could Microsoft Possibly do?

“The online display market is one that Microsoft appears to be increasingly focused on, in its ongoing battle with Google, as it walks away from the Yahoo deal. Yesterday, the company released its slate of alternative Yahoo directors indicating it was formally closing the door on the hostile takeover option.” – SE Land.

So it seems that Microsoft unofficially acknowledged defeat and is now focusing on its strong side – display ads. The recent purchase of aQuantive for $6 billion made Microsoft a leader in display ad market, followed by Google’s Double Click. This would seem logical. If you’re ugly but smart, don’t cry about your ugliness, focus on using the brains! A girl will eventually come along that will appreciate the brilliance of the brains. In Microsoft’s case, forget search, if it doesn’t work, after repeated failures. Not to say drop it, but focus on the strong sides and leave Google obsession. Google is years ahead and its brand is synonymous with search.

“Display is an area where Microsoft feels it can go head to head with Google and potentially win. However, DoubleClick reportedly has developed a similar model and analytical approach, which tries to show a more complete picture of ad exposures and their relative effectiveness. I heard yesterday, however, from one agency that has been exposed to both toolsets that the Atlas approach is better calibrated to what agencies want and the DoubleClick approach has too much complexity.

Of course Google has it’s eyes open, but that’s an area where Microsoft can be formidable rival. And that’s a start for Microsoft. Small incremental steps get us to the destination.

Google announced that landing page load time will be a part of the Adwords Quality Score.
