Video Search Engine Review Part 1

With the invention of flash videos, online videos became HOT. There are over 200 flash video hosting websites and video search engines (full list below). You Tube was first and was the solution to “video search”. Since it’s success, over 200 hundred sites tried to duplicate YouTube and lure in users with more hip features. Though You Tube has it all, it doesn’t hurt to search other sites.

Blinx and EveryZing are 2 video search engines that attempt to search video sites. Today we look at Blinx.

Blinx – Video Search Engine

Blinx goes: “Over 26 million hours of video. Search it all.”

Technology:

Blinx has power under the hood. It uses speech recognition and speech to text technology to index videos. It also has image recognition software to search within videos and classic on page analysis, links analysis, titles, etc.

“blinkx’s unique, patented and award-winning video and audio analysis technology, which literally watches and listens to rich media content online, has enabled it to build a massively detailed, objective and scalable index.”

Blinx Features:

  • 350 media partnerships
  • 26 million hours of searchable video
  • technology that was conceived at Cambridge University, enhanced by $150M in R&D over 12 years, and is now protected by 111 patents
  • search for video content, create personal video play lists, or build a customized Video Wall for their blog or MySpace page

Performance:

That’s all freakin impressive. Got the blood rushing. What can you do for me? The short attention span, “couldn’t care less”, “give me now the best”, “in the hurry” internet user?

Home page got a nice thumbnail of videos. You can view News, Entertainment, Business, Sport, Music, Viral, Science and Tech, Education, Travel, Home, Film, Environment, Automotive, Gaming. Very nice. Got me interested.

But how that techno bragging delivers if I want to search. For example “The Secret”. This title is popular, so I expect snippets of the movie, reviews and related videos:

hmmm… not exactly what I expected. There’s some channel 4 videos, CBC, ITN, You Tube, Veoh… some news.. but where’s my movie snippets? Get to page 2, no “Secret” in sight… hmm….

Let’s search “SEO”, assuming I want to learn some.

This time Blinx performs and gives me, quality. I’m satisfied.

Couple more searches and Blinx did pretty good.

More emphasis on fresh content

Blinx has over 300 media partnerships so it puts more emphasis on new videos as opposed to “authoritative” videos. Searching, you’ll see outlets otherwise not found on Google Video, Live Video and other search engines.

A BIG plus for news oriented searches. A turn off for those looking for more relevance in video search. You’ll enjoy blinx if you like watching news online. As for me, Google Video is still video search of preference. (search engine land says VideoSurf kicks butt, so can’t wait to get my test account with them).

Next review: Video search engine “EveryZing”.

About Blinx:

Founded in 2004 by Suranga Chandratillake, the company completed a tremendously successful IPO on the London Stock Exchange (AIM) in May, 2007 and currently has a market capitalization of US$350M*, with headquarters in San Francisco, CA and the UK.
