Google’s Public Policies Agenda
- Net neutrality: I think you agree that net neutrality is the foundation of the internet and needs to stay that way. Psychotic proposals from AT&T to monitor and regulate traffic would be a stepping stone to Chinese like monitored control grid. Internet is the last avenue of real journalism. If any of the giants are allowed to regulate it, internet will go the same corrupt road as TV news media, newspapers, and radio stations, where the “news†is what few people at the top decide you should know. Google’s efforts to keep net neutral, though purely for the sake of business, benefit everyone.
- Wireless Open Access and White Spaces: With this model “white space†can actually serve to the tax payer benefit more than if the space was bought by a private company. If I can use internet via “white space†for free or for much smaller charge than regular internet, I definitely benefit. This is one of the opportunities Google saw or one of the strategies Google came up against competition which promotes true innovation. If a company can get media and cable giants shivering – this inevitably promotes competition and lower prices.
- Copyright Reform: I am of the torrent generation and have little respect for copyright, but it does hurt many businesses. This is a move by Google to shield it’s billions against future lawsuits.
- Open Source: I believe all users enjoy open source. Great examples are Firefox, Open Office. I also think the endorsement of open source by Google has little to do with helping users, but rather a strategy to undermine Microsoft.
